Egg prices in Kenya

What a tray, crate and single egg typically cost, why the number moves, and how to price your own eggs so feed is always covered.

Updated October 24, 2026. Prices are indicative, not a quotation.

Typical range

Most Kenyan layer farms sell a tray of 30 eggs for roughly KES 380 to KES 480 at farm gate, which is about KES 12.70 to KES 16 per egg. Town retailers often sell a tray for KES 450 to KES 550. A crate of 360 eggs usually trades between KES 4,500 and KES 5,700.

Your price depends on location, volume, egg size and whether you deliver.

What moves the price

Feed cost

Feed is the biggest input in an egg. When maize and soya prices rise, egg prices eventually follow. A farm that knows its feed cost per egg can hold on longer when the market dips.

Season and school terms

Demand rises when schools are open and during festive periods. It softens in long holidays and after major public holidays. Plan flock placement so peak lay does not land entirely in a slow month.

Heat and disease

Hot weather lowers feed intake and egg size. Disease outbreaks can cut supply across a whole region and push prices up, but that is not a market you want to depend on.

Distance to market

Transport adds cost per tray. A farm selling in Nyeri, Nairobi and surrounding towns has to price each route separately, including breakage and returns.

Set your price from cost, not rumour

Work out feed cost per egg first. If 1,000 layers at 85% lay eat 115 kg per day at KES 55 per kg, feed costs about KES 7.44 per egg. Add labour, health, power, transport and mortality, then add your margin. That is your break-even, and any price below it is a slow loss.

Use the feed cost per egg calculator and the break-even calculator. Then use the profit calculator to test a lower price before you agree to it.

Where to sell

  • Hotels and restaurants: steady volume, usually weekly payment.
  • Small shops and kiosks: regular orders, smaller trays, more handling.
  • Schools and institutions: large tenders, slow payment, strict quality checks.
  • Direct to households: best price per tray, more time and delivery cost.
  • Other farms and traders: fast turnover, lowest price.

A mix of two or three channels is safer than one large buyer who pays late.

Questions about egg prices

How much is a tray of eggs in Kenya?

Usually KES 380 to KES 480 at farm gate and KES 450 to KES 550 in town retail. Location and volume change it.

How many eggs are in a crate?

A crate holds 30 trays, so 360 eggs.

Why do egg prices fall in some months?

School holidays, lower demand, good weather and heavy local supply all push prices down.

Should I sell per egg or per tray?

Sell in the unit your buyer uses, but always check the per-egg equivalent so a crate discount does not become a loss.
